COLD ASPHALT APPLICATION

UNIQUE USAGE OF OLD ASPHALT

By utilising Blend Plants E-Series mobile mixing plants it is now possible to utilise the old bituminous road surfaces when stripping back a road to repair it.   This is the ultimate in recycling for road repair.  The recycling process produces a high-quality product which hardens with compaction; absolutely no heat is required.

The cold asphalt process allows for deformed areas and irregular thickness of layers on road surfaces to be repaired by reusing the existing road surface.  This recycling reduces the exploitation of new quarries and therefore the impact of mining on the environment.  Transport costs of materials to the site and the removal of old bituminous road surface refuse is vastly reduced, thereby making road repair more affordable.  The time taken to repair and resurface roads is also reduced as well as the number of vehicles circulating to and from the worksite.

Companies are no longer faced with leaving piles of redundant asphalt on the roadside to be disposed of later.  Now it is possible to mill the old layers of the bituminous road surface on-site, before transferring them to the mobile mixing plant along with the special emulsion, concrete and water.  The different materials in the mobile mixing plant are mixed on-site in batches as required to create cold asphalt.  The new road is laid using bitumen emulsions without the heat and fumes of traditional road repair and replacement.

Indirect traction Rt (N / mm2)

The benefits of cold asphalt range from energy saving to sustainability through recycling.  From the contractors perspective, there is a reduction of dust and noxious fumes for their employees to come in contact with.  The use of cold asphalt benefits the environment due to a reduction in mining.

The laboratory results of cold asphalt technology show the Rt and CTI performance tends to improve over time. This allows cold asphalt technology to compete in strength with hot asphalt.
